how do you decide whee to add the darkest shading? or is it random. Whenever I try to add things like that to my hair it looks very wrong

uhh i really dont know what you tell you other than intuition...? practice? looking at references? think about how shadows work when things overlap.

What did you do differently between your first attempt at painting, and the new picture regarding in how you paint skin? ^^ Whenever I try to paint skin it ends up like your first attempt picture, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it!

I jumped in randomly but this is pretty helpful. I like your explanation in the beginning about sketching better hair. I still feel my hair's a bit uh blocky but gotta keep practicing! I've also never tried painting hair before so this will come in handy to start. Thank youu. :]

I prefer your first attempt, it seems more smooth and the amazing technique of the flowy and line-art free, which looks better in my opinion than the one in the tutorial.
I think if you used the eye shape and look on the picture with the line-artless picture it would look totally amazing.
Just to let you know, its my critique and its how I see, your art would be even more improved, but I understand you might completely disagree.
Hopefully you might just take in what I think on so far, but well done on your art .

uhh excuse me? so in your opinion i have regressed in this one year... i think i prefer the solidity of a painted coloured outline even. as i said in the walkthrough, i see bust shots to have more need for detail so yea ofc theres gonna be more lines...

the eyes of course would be a lot better since its pretty much been almost a year.
